A WOMAN AND HER WORDS

CRITIC REVIEWS

Tadia's voice is extraordinary, passionate, mystical and unforgettable. She delivers the poetry of Tahirih with a strong vocal personality and a mystical quality to match. Her voice explores melodic expressions with a sweet sensuality that can only be described as a silky velvet wrapped in satin. Powerfully controlled, Tadia is a master of vocal color and texture - singing jazz to new age, gospel to spoken word, pop ballad to operatic- all as fitting tributes to her subject. Powerful poetry sung beautifully! It's a tremendous and wonderful artistic achievement that reflects meaningful and significant work.

A WOMAN AND HER WORDS - The Story of Tahirih is absolutely sensational! Tadia meanders with ease through different styles of singing, never once leaving the listener behind.

Tadia is a solid singer with all the throaty power of a Mahalia Jackson... her delivery has soothing qualities. Tahirih's poetry, vivid in romantic images has a cadence and style that should find a wide audience. Tadia is a very accomplished singer. This is well-sung poetry.

History comes alive when Tadia Rice performs A WOMAN AND HER WORDS The Story of Tahirih. With song, poetry and prose, the life of this remarkable heroine takes form. Rice artfully uses different musical styles with a full range of vocal color and texture. Rice mystically carries her audience on Tahirih's spiritual journey as she articulated and promoted the emancipation of women at great personal peril. Tahirih's strength and courage is reflected in a strong and vibrant voice that resonates throughout the hall. As Rice moves through the episodes and stages of Tahirih's life, one is struck by a singleness of purpose which defies description. This unflagging commitment is reflected in the consistency of performance. Rice never falls out of character. Taken as a whole, the performance is an emotional experience giving greater insight and appreciation to this unique heroine and the price she paid for a cause whose time had come. The audience leaves with a sense of assurance that neither the heroine spokesperson, nor the cause itself, will ever be forgotten. Tadia's performance in December 1999 at the Parliament of World Religions in Cape Town, South Africa had a poetic beauty due to the location. Tahirih devoted her life to the emancipation of women and all peoples. South Africa, just five years after apartheid, is making conspicuous progress in recovering from the shackles of that oppression. Both the performance and the setting were eloquent testimonies to our progress toward social justice, and the resiliency of the human spirit.

I was moved by the story of Tahirih, a heroine I didn’t know about. Her courage and spiritual message was conveyed through Tadia’s great performance and incredible voice! There are times in history when people around the world play a role to propel humanity toward its future. Tahirih helped do this, mirroring the western world and other great people of her time. This is really such an important and incredible story that had to be told.

This CD may prove the inception of completely new genre! The backdrop provides a fascinating collection of information about the impact of historical, social, and spiritual events of the 19th-century in the East and the West – and their influence on our own time. In this context, Tahirih's passionate and dramatic poetry is delivered in Tadia’s exquisite voice and with her distinctive style, with haunting and beautiful music from a multitude of cultural backgrounds. An artist not to be missed!

America has long awaited an English translation of Tahirih's poetry. Tadia is a pure channel to convey not only the words and life of this 19th-century Persian heroine and champion equality but also the passion of this revolutionary woman. The poems, set to to the music of Ellis Hall and Tadia, are spellbinding. The storybook character of Tahirih is lifted off the pages of history. Tadia has given us the gift of knowing the sisterhood of Tahirih.

A WOMAN AND HER WORDS The Story of Tahirih is a compelling, invigorating and complete story. The performances are absolutely inspiring and moving. I learned so much, not only about Tahirih but also about the women's movement. Tadia’s singing is articulate yet mellow. Her voice is rich, soothing and peaceful. She encompasses you as she sings the songs. They’re like drops falling into pools of water and creating graceful circles. I could listen to her sing all the time! Everyone should experience this CD!

This show gave so much historical perspective. I was able to cross reference what was going on in America and the world with that of the life story of Tahirih. I appreciated the education and the entertainment of  A WOMAN AND HER WORDS The Story of Tahirih.

A WOMAN AND HER WORDS was beautiful and poetic. The message of Tahirih has left its mark on the world, especially about the issue of equality. More people need to know about Tahirih, and her very important message.
Lisa Marie Andrews, Los Angeles, California

Somewhere between the voices of Roberta Flack and Barbra Streisand resides the voice of Tadia. Her vocal quality is as clear as the message she conveys. She brings the life and poetry of Tahirih to remarkable life with a voice as powerful as her character.
